Happy adoption stories
Many of our adopters, volunteers, donors and friends send us stories and photos of the animals who give them so much joy. We dedicate this space to all of you whose lives have been changed by animals.
Shire
We adopted Shire (previously known as Tasman) from SPCA's Masterton Centre.
When we first saw her in her cage she was very timid, hiding in the corner, running away from any pats, and not pleased having us invade her space. But we saw potential in her, and decided to take her home.
At first opportunity she ran to hide under the dresser where she bunked down for a few hours. After a while she gained some courage and started slowly coming out to explore, but would run back to the dresser if anyone moved.
After a few days and a lot of treats, she allowed us to touch her, and she came to the realization that she absolutely loved pats with the loudest purr I've heard in a long time - but she was definitely still unsure and spent a lot of time under the dresser where she decided was safest.
A few weeks later and she is the happiest little kitten running around and bouncing off the walls, and after a full day of playing she cuddles up in between us in bed for pats and a good night's sleep.
We are absolutely smitten with her and she's definitely spoiled, but she deserves it because she's the cutest little thing ever – and we can't wait for her to grow up in our loving home <3
