SPCA advocates for an end to the use of animals in rodeo events in New Zealand. While rodeo continues in New Zealand, SPCA advocates for those involved in rodeos to improve practices and to provide a Good Life where rodeo animals experience positive welfare and their physical, health, and behavioural needs are met for the whole of their lives.

Saleyards
SPCA advocates for animals to travel directly from farm-to-farm or from farm-to-slaughterhouse rather than via saleyards.

Science and Technology Fairs
SPCA supports science education for students in primary and secondary levels, including an appreciation of animals. Our organisation advocates animals should only be used in primary and secondary science education when the animal’s physical, health, and behavioural needs are met before, during, and after a research or technology study.

Sea Lions
SPCA opposes human activities that result in the injuries or deaths of New Zealand sea lions. SPCA advocates for increased protection of sea lion welfare and recover the species to non-threatened status. Our organisation is concerned with fisheries activities that impact sea lions, particularly around breeding populations.

Selective Breeding
SPCA supports responsible breeding practices which prioritise animal welfare and advocates for desexing of non-breeding animals.
SPCA opposes the selective breeding of any animal that results in behavioural or physical diseases or defects that negatively affects the health and welfare of the animal concerned.

Selective Breeding and Genetic Technologies
SPCA opposes the selection of animals for accelerated growth rates and other enhanced production traits where this may result in the inhibition of normal activity, cause metabolic or skeletal defects, chronic lameness and pain, increased mortality or other welfare problems.

Shade and Shelter
SPCA advocates for unrestricted access to shade and shelter for all pastorally farmed animals.

Sharks
SPCA advocates for non-lethal methods of shark attack prevention, for example, patrols and surveillance, and educational programmes on shark awareness. SPCA opposes the culling of sharks, i.e., the baiting and killing of sharks, to reduce shark attacks.

Shearing (Including Crutching and Dagging)
SPCA acknowledges the importance of shearing for the welfare of sheep and other farmed species selected for fibre production.

SPCA advocates for community-centred approach to animal care and shelter management that focuses on prevention and provides animals in shelter care with a Good Life where they experience positive welfare and their physical, health, and behavioural needs are met.
