277 of SPCA’s longest-waiting residents have now found loving homes as part of our ‘Special Love Needed’ campaign, which removed adoption fees to find the right homes.

Special love found: SPCA’s long-stay residents go on to their forever homes

With hundreds of long-stay animals in SPCA’s care, our ‘Special Love Needed’ campaign aimed to find as many loving homes as possible.

Between Saturday 6 – Sunday 21 July, adoption fees were removed for any animal that had been available for adoption for 40 days or longer. With all usual vetting processes remaining in place, the campaign ensured that each animal went to the right home.

“We’re so pleased to have matched so many of these wonderful animals with their forever homes,” says Dr Corey Regnerus-Kell, SPCA General Manager of Animal Services.

“There were animals that had been waiting months and even years to be adopted, so it’s very rewarding to see them finally leave the shelter environment and head off with their new families.”

Among the longest-waiting animals that have now been adopted was a cat named Carolina, who had been available for adoption for 412 days. There was also a rabbit named Gidget who had been waiting for 402 days, and a dog named Missy who had been with SPCA for 386 days.

Of the 277 animals adopted during the campaign, this included 89 cats, 108 kittens, 19 dogs, 31 puppies, 17 rabbits, among other species such as birds, horses, and reptiles.

While some of the animals included in the campaign were a bit older, or had special health concerns, many were just a bit shy – this meant they struggled to attract potential adopters for a long time.

There are still many animals still waiting for their happily ever after. You can view their adoption profiles and apply to meet them online.
