Electric Prodders

SPCA advocates that the need for electric prodding devices can be eliminated with appropriate handling and husbandry techniques and improved equipment and facilities.

SPCA opposes the use of electric prodders due to the pain and distress caused to animals.

Better designed facilities, including raceways and equipment, slaughterhouses and transport arrangements and low stress animal handling practices eliminate the need to use electric prodders. Our organisation supports the farming industry to adopt these humane alternatives.

SPCA opposes restrictions limiting the use of electric prodders based on the estimated weight of the animal.

There is a proven difficulty in accurately guessing the weight of many animals, and such an assessment relies on the subjective nature and the differing abilities of those making the estimation.
