Identification of Companion Animals

SPCA advocates that owners of a companion animal ensure that the animal is appropriately identifiable.

Where practical for the species, companion animals should be identified with both a microchip and external identification, such as an appropriate collar and identification tag. The animal’s microchip registration details should be kept up-to-date on appropriate registers (e.g. the New Zealand Companion Animal Register and National Dog Database).

SPCA advocates for the introduction of mandatory microchipping of owned cats and managed stray cats.

The animal’s microchip registration details should be kept up-to-date on appropriate registers (e.g. the New Zealand Companion Animal Register).
