Snip 'n’ Chip: Empowering feline welfare across New Zealand

04 March 2025

We’re thrilled to announce the next phase of our National Desexing Programme (NDP) with our upcoming Snip 'n’ Chip campaigns!

Snip 'n’ Chip: Empowering feline welfare across New Zealand

Kicking off in March, the campaigns aim to desex and microchip an incredible 4,028 cats and kittens in the community. This initiative offers cat owners vouchers for desexing and microchipping at a cost of $30 with SPCA proudly covering the remaining desexing expenses, thanks to support from generous funders and participating vet clinics, ensuring every cat receives the surgery they deserve.

Powered by partnership and purpose

These ambitious campaigns are turbo-charged by a generous grant from Companion Animals New Zealand (NZCAT), who’ve donated 1,200 microchips and registrations. Their unwavering support is helping us tackle feline overpopulation head-on, one snip and chip at a time. Together, we’re building a brighter future for cats across Aotearoa—and we couldn’t be more excited!

Nationwide impact, one community at a time

Throughout March, Snip 'n’ Chip is hitting the road, bringing desexing and microchipping to regions far and wide. Our first locations this year will include Kerikeri, Whangārei, Kaitaia, Auckland, Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau, Dannevirke, Taumarunui, Dunedin, Timaru, Oamaru, Twizel, Wanaka, Queenstown, Alexandra, Gore, and Reefton - we’re ensuring the impact is felt as widely as possible.

Every campaign is meticulously planned with specific dates and voucher allocations to maximise our impact and bring real change to local communities. Cat owners can secure their vouchers on SPCA's desexing website.

More locations will follow later in the year.

A shared vision for a better tomorrow

NZCAT’s ongoing support with microchips and registrations is a game-changer, empowering us to desex and microchip as many felines as possible. With their help, we’re poised to make a lasting difference to the lives of thousands of cats and the families who love them. Want to learn more about why microchipping matters? Check out our story on the Domestic Cat Microchipping Bill and join us in hoping it moves forward to benefit every feline in New Zealand.

When we work together - SPCA, NZCAT, and animal lovers like you - we can do extraordinary things. Snip 'n’ Chip isn’t just about curbing feline overpopulation; it’s about enhancing responsible pet ownership and giving every cat a chance at a healthier, happier life. Let’s keep the momentum going and make 2025 a landmark year for feline welfare in New Zealand!
