Dew Claw Removal
SPCA advocates for the removal of any dew claws from dogs to be prohibited unless carried out by a veterinarian (or a veterinary student under the direct supervision of a veterinarian) for therapeutic reasons and adequate and appropriate medical care is provided prior to, during and after the operation, including anaesthesia and analgesia.
Articulated dew claws may function to prevent foot injury by providing support when running and to keep objects steady while a dog is chewing them.
Removal of a dog’s front limb dewclaw or articulated hind limb dewclaw is prohibited under the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations 2018 unless by a veterinarian with pain relief. Only a veterinarian can remove non-articulated hind limb dewclaw for puppies over four days of age, however removal of non-articulated hind limb dewclaw of puppies under four days of age is still permitted by anyone.
SPCA advocates for the elimination of dew claw removal from breed standards for pedigree animals.
