Live Animals as Prizes
SPCA opposes using live animals as prizes due to the potential negative impacts on the animal’s welfare.
Live animals are sometimes used as prizes in competitions, raffles, or fairs (e.g. goldfish in plastic bags of water). Animals intended to be used as prizes may be bred or kept in stressful conditions which do not meet their physical, health and behavioural needs. Using live animals as prizes may result in recipients who lack the knowledge of responsible pet ownership practices or motivation to meet the animal’s needs.
