Wildlife Contraception and Non-surgical Sterilisation
SPCA advocates for research and funding to develop viable contraception options for wildlife as an alternative to lethal control for species targeted in pest control.
Contraception options can help minimise the need for mustering species such as wild horses, goats, or geese. Contraception provides an alternative method to lethal population control and can help minimise the use of poisons or kill traps that also pose welfare risks to non-target animals.
Contraception can be provided through different routes, for example in feed, through injections, or as injectable implants. Contraceptives in food are temporary and reversable and can be targeted to the specific species through feed type and design of bait stations or feeders.
SPCA is concerned with unintentional consequences of using contraceptives. SPCA advocates that oral contraception for wild animals be allowed for use by trained professionals competent in dispensing this substance. This will further ensure that it is used appropriately and monitored to allow for ongoing assessment of impacts and avoid unintended impacts.
