SPCA’s matched giving day: the results are in

14 March 2025

Earlier this week on Wednesday 12 March, New Zealanders doubled their impact by donating to SPCA’s one day of matched giving. A whopping $373,476.83 was raised for the animals!

The whole SPCA New Zealand team was blown away by the day’s success, which hugely exceeded what the charity hoped would be collectively raised on the day.

With a matched funding pool of $100,000 thanks to the wonderful team at Petdirect and some generous individual donors, the fundraising target for the day was $200,000.

But, inspired by the momentum seen on the day, some generous individuals came forward on the day, adding an extra $20,000 to the pool of money matching donations. What an amazing show of support for the animals! This gave us a new target of $240,000 total raised on the day... a target that was far outreached by midnight on Wednesday.

The total figure raised by the end of the amazing day was $373,476.83, which came from 4,485 individuals by way of online donations, over the phone, mailed donations, check-out donations via Petdirect’s online store, and of course the generous funding from our matched funders.

SPCA CEO Todd Westwood says the charity was “overwhelmed” by the response.

“This day far exceeded our expectations for how much we could come together to raise for animals in need. The result shows how caring this country is towards our furry friends, and it has been an incredible boost to us all. It’s not easy to put into words how much of an impact Wednesday will have.”

The funds raised will go towards the myriads of costs associated with caring for abused, abandoned and neglected animals. This includes the purchase of medications and supplies, surgeries and vaccinations, and all the essential care items for animals while they await adoption.

A big thank you to the team at Petdirect and the generous individuals who matched the first $120,000 donated on Wednesday.

And a huge thank you to every single person who donated or shared the call to action on the day, helping make it the success it was.

“What we witnessed on Wednesday was a collective determination to build a better tomorrow for the animals,” Mr Westwood added. “Thank you for reminding us what is possible when we work together for good.”
