SPCA’s Mobile Desexing Clinic ready for first South Island campaign
Pet owners in Karamea will be the first in the South Island to access free desexing services, as the SPCA Mobile Desexing Clinic launches at the end of March.
SPCA’s Mobile Desexing Clinic (known to staff as ‘Snippy’) will be ready to provide desexing services for pet owners in the West Coast town of Karamea later this month.
Karamea is situated about one and a half hours from Westport, and has been identified as a key location with extremely high numbers of undesexed cats and dogs.
“The overpopulation of companion animals there is huge, so we know we’ll be able to make a real difference by targeting this location,” says Rebecca Dobson, SPCA National Desexing Programme Manager.
“Currently, the breeding is out of control, and pet owners don’t have easy access to a veterinary clinic – it’s approximately a three-hour round trip for Karamea residents to get to a vet.”
The SPCA Mobile Desexing Clinic will be stationed at the Four Square, 103 Bridge Street in Karamea from Monday 31 March until Friday 4 April.
SPCA is excited to also offer new ‘wellness checks’ for animals.
“Snippy will be offering two different services to help local pet owners,” says Ms Dobson. “One services is the desexing and microchipping, and the other is for vet wellness checks. These include vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, microchipping, and basic consultations.”
With the help of two vets, two vet nurses, and additional staff from the SPCA Christchurch team, we’re aiming to desex 60 cats, eight dogs, and provide 80 wellness consultations.
Karamea cat and dog owners who would like to check availability should visit SPCA Mobile Desexing | Clinic HQ, or call 022 362 5105 during business hours if they need assistance booking.
Desexing is also available in Westport – Westport residents can reach out to the SPCA Greymouth Centre for more information.
