Petition to protect the ban on live exports handed over at Parliament
With 57,357 signatures gathered since early March, SPCA and other animal organisations gathered at Parliament to witness the handing over of the petition to Labour MP Hon Damien O’Connor.
Launched in March this year, the petition to protect the ban on live exports by sea was today handed over at Parliament, with over 57,000 signatures.
The petition was lodged by retired veterinarian Dr John Hellström ONZM, and was jointly supported by New Zealand’s leading animal advocates including SPCA, World Animal Protection, Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE), Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Aotearoa (VAWA), Animals Aotearoa, Helping You Help Animals (HUHA), Animal Save Aotearoa, and End Live Export New Zealand.
We at SPCA were thrilled to see so many supporters raise their voice by adding their name to the petition, sending a clear message to the Government that New Zealanders will not tolerate the return of this practice.
Chief Scientific Officer Dr Arnja Dale says that this public pressure will be key in informing the Government’s decision.
“New Zealanders have said it loud and clear – the return of live exports would be a giant leap backwards for animal welfare, and we can’t let this happen,” says Dr Dale. “With so many people signing the petition, this is something the Government now can’t ignore.”
The handover event had a successful turnout despite the rainy conditions, with both human and canine supporters of the ban in attendance. The crowd enjoyed speeches for a range of experts including our own, Dr Arnja Dale. Karen O’Leary MC’d the event, adding some levity and entertaining the crowd with her own rendition of “Old MacDonald had a Farm”.
We would like to thank everybody who took the time to sign the petition, and to those who shared it with their friends, family and colleagues.
“Our voices are louder together, and we were only able to achieve this result with the ongoing support of the public and the other organisations who stood with us for the animals,” says Dr Dale.
The petition will next be presented to the house by Labour MP Hon Damien O’Connor, to then be referred to the relevant select committee. SPCA will provide updates on any developments as they arise.
